Philosophy
As my Ottawa grade school teacher Miss B.K. Jackson said , “ You only get out of a thing what you put into it.”
For me, teaching and learning is an exciting partnership of teachers and learners, that creates and sparks insights, ideas and growth. We take turns learning from each other, in and out of the classroom. I have taught at four universities (Delhi, Dalhousie, U of T and UWO) and now at Humber and the most wonderful moments are those dynamic exchanges in the classroom when all the lights go on. I have hired and worked with former students in corporations and campuses and on an ongoing journey of ideas and insights.
So for me teaching and learning is a dynamic partnership, a vital exchange of ideas, thoughts and feelings that create learning and energize careers. What makes this happen is careful preparation, mutual respect and accountability and an exchange of ideas across the class, in small groups, in one-on-one conversations. Learning happens when each partner contributes his or her best.
Each learner learns differently and each teacher teaches differently. The constant challenge is to be aware of a wide spectrum of abilities and interests. What matters is delivering learning that works for each unique individual to help them succeed.
